Studying health and welfare? Time to protect yourself against influenza!

Influenza vaccinations are about to begin. Medical students and health and welfare students in higher education, as well as students belonging to a risk group can receive their influenza vaccinations from the FSHS free of charge. Vaccination instructions for particular groups can be found below.

You belong to a risk group if influenza poses a significant health risk to you or if you’re repeatedly in close contact with people at risk of serious influenza. Students belonging to a risk group include for instance pregnant women and students with diabetes or chronic cardiac or pulmonary disease.

When and where to receive the vaccination

If you belong to any of the above groups, you can receive the influenza vaccination in your place of study or work placement – either at an FSHS service unit or a partner service unit. The services provided by partners are only intended for students studying at the institutions of higher education in these towns.

Vaccination arrangements vary between towns. At some service units, students need to book an individual vaccination appointment, whereas in some towns there’ll be mass vaccinations at service units or institutions of higher education.

Influenza vaccinations will take place between November and January. For more information about vaccinations in your place of study, check here.

  • Please note that partner units will only vaccinate their own customers.
  • In Self, complete the appropriate form between 1 November 2021 and 31 January 2022 to receive the authorisation to use outsourced services. You’ll need the authorisation to book an appointment for the influenza vaccination at a partner unit.
  • As soon as you’ve been granted the authorisation, you’ll receive a confirmation SMS.
  • Book the appointment by calling the partner unit’s booking service and remember to mention that it’s about the influenza vaccination. Check here who produces the services.
  • The partner unit will give you more instructions on arriving for the influenza vaccination.

Cancelling or postponing an appointment

If you’ve booked an appointment for the influenza vaccination but are unable to attend, remember to postpone or cancel the appointment at least 24 hours beforehand.

If your vaccination appointment is at an FSHS service unit, postpone or cancel it in Self. When you postpone the appointment, you will not lose your booking permission. Please note that you will not receive a reminder SMS about postponed appointments. If you don’t need the appointment, you can cancel it. Remember that if you cancel your appointment, you’ll lose your booking permission.

If your vaccination appointment is at a partner service unit, postpone or cancel it according to the service provider’s instructions.

If you’re attending a mass vaccination that doesn’t require an appointment, you don’t have to inform us about your attendance.

Arriving for the vaccination

You must be healthy to attend the vaccination. We recommend using a face mask while on FSHS premises.

Arrive punctually for the appointment. Be prepared to queue (see the instructions for your location). At some mass vaccination events you’ll have to queue outdoors.

When you arrive you’ll have to prove your identity with a photo ID (such as an ID card, a Kela card or a student card).

Possible symptoms after the vaccination

As with all vaccinations, mild adverse reactions may occur after the influenza vaccination. These reactions may include headache, fever, nausea, sweating, muscle or joint pain, fatigue and local injection site reactions. They usually disappear within 1-2 days.

Vaccinations for other students

If you’re not a health and welfare student or don’t belong to a risk group but would like to receive the influenza vaccine, the FSHS can provide you with a vaccine prescription. You can then purchase the vaccine at a pharmacy at your own expense. Contact the assessment of need for treatment team (general health) by phone or via SelfChat. At the same time, you can book a vaccination appointment at your own service unit or get the instructions for booking one at a partner unit.
