The amounts of the student healthcare fees for higher education students in 2026 have been confirmed by a government decree.
Next year, the student-specific healthcare fee charged from higher education students for using student healthcare services will be EUR 70.70 per academic year, or EUR 35.35 per term, which is slightly less than in 2025.
The students should pay the fee to Kela unprompted
The students in higher education should pay the health care fee to Kela for both the spring and autumn semesters unprompted.
Keep an eye on Kela’s website, as Kela will update the payment instructions for 2026 there. You can also find the due dates on Kela’s website.
All questions about the healthcare fee should be addressed directly to Kela, which is responsible for collecting the healthcare fee.
Kela charges 5 euros as a late payment fee if a student pays the healthcare fee after the due date. The late payment fee will remain unchanged.
Remember to reschedule or cancel your appointment well in advance
The charge for an unattended appointment (56.70 euros) will remain unchanged in 2026. The FSHS charges the fee if a student is absent from a booked appointment and hasn´t rescheduled or cancelled it in time. If necessary, an appointment must be rescheduled or canceled no later than 24 hours in advance.
The decree on healthcare fees is issued annually
Under the Student Healthcare Act, provisions on the amount of the healthcare fee must be issued annually by government decree by the end of November so that both the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela) and students will know the amount of the fee as soon as the following calendar year starts. The decree on healthcare fees is issued annually.
The aim is to cover 77 per cent of the funding for student healthcare from central government funds and 23 per cent by healthcare fees to be collected from students.
The healthcare fee is the same for all students liable to pay such a fee. Degree students in higher education institutions coming from EU and EEA countries, Switzerland, or from the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland are exempted from paying healthcare fees for student healthcare. They must present a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) when accessing FSHS services.
